Problems with width on elements in HTML

I have created a jHtmlArea on my web page.
I am giving my users some pre-created templates to use as a starting point for creating a message with jHtmlArea.

My templates are showing up fine in the editor, but I am experiencing issues when any HTML elements have a 'width'
For example, if I pre-load the following into the editor:

<span>Template</span>
<span style="width: 30%">This is a message template</span>

I can click and edit the word 'Template' fine, but if I click on the second line, the editor treats it similar to like what MS Word does to images.
It gives me the resize cursor and draws a box around the element trying to allow me to resize it.

Has anyone else experienced this issue, or know how I can set widths on elements in the editor without this behaviour?
Thanks.
